Akhtyrka (other spelling Okhtyrka) is a city located in Sumy oblast (region) of Ukraine, administrative center of Akhtyrka district. Akhtyrka city is an important cultural, historical and spiritual center of Ukraine. The city is standing on the left bank of Vorskla River.

Akhtyrka settlement was founded by Poles in 1641. In the period from 17th to 18th century Akhtyrka was one of the centers of Sloboda Ukraine being almost as powerful as Kharkov city itself. Akhtyrka city was the place where first Ukrainian tobacco manufacture was built in 1718. In 1781 Akhtyrka received coat of arms from Russian ruler Catherine II.

Akhtyrka district is the major producer of Ukrainian oil. Among the other industries are light woolen stuffs and domestic industries production, food-processing (corn, cattle and fruit). There is also a brewery of Obolon CJSC in Akhtyrka city.

Akhtyrka city is rich in various places of interest. There are a lot of buildings of 19th century and several churches. The main attraction is cathedral built in 1753-1762 by Dmitry Ukhtomsky and Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The three tiers bell tower of the cathedral was finished in 1783. The Nativity church (1825) situated nearby is looking like a palace but not a church.
