Artemovsk city (also known as Artemivsk; historical name - Bakhmut) is the oldest historical and cultural center of Donbas region (Donetsk oblast), located about 88 km from Donetsk city. Artemovsk is in the league of historical cities of Ukraine and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the country.

Artemovsk is one of the oldest cities in the Donets Basin, and on the east of Ukraine in general. The settlement was founded in 1571 and had a rich history. Artemovsk emerged as the border "Bakhmut watch post", and was later transformed into a fortified village.
In 1701 Peter I ordered to build a fortress Bakhmut and renamed the settlement into the town (fort) of Bakhmut. In 1783 Bakhmut received the status of district town of Ekaterinoslav province. The population of the town was about 1,700 people. There were five brick, candle, soap plants. The town had store, about 150 shops, a hospital, three schools and two private boarding schools for children of wealthy parents, Sunday school for children of workers.
Bakhmut was the largest trade center. Twice a year - July 12 (the day of the apostles Peter and Paul) and September 21 (the day of Christmas of the Blessed Virgin Mary) - there were large fairs.
In 1876 in the Bakhmut basin large deposits of rock salt were discovered. The number of mines rapidly increased, and soon the production of salt reached about 12% of all Russian. After the construction of the railroad in the late 1870's the enterprises producing plaster, brick, tile, soda appeared in the town. In the early twentieth century metal-working industry began to develop. By 1900 there were 76 small industrial enterprises, employing 1,078 people, and four salt mines (874 workers) in the town.
By 1913 the population of Bakhmut was about 28,000 people, there were two hospitals, four medium and two vocational schools, private library. In 1924 the city was renamed into Artemovsk by the nickname ("Artem") of Soviet party and state leader Fyodor Sergeyev.
Since 1951, Artemovsk city operates Europe's largest Artemovsky factory of sparkling wines, since 1954 - the plant for processing non-ferrous metals. In 1964 all Soviet Union Scientific Research Institute of the salt industry was opened in the city. Today it is known as "UkrNIIsol".

Artemovsk is a developed industrial city. The products of Artemovsk companies are known far beyond Ukraine. The only plant in the country plant for processing non-ferrous metals operates here. Artemovsk factory of sparkling wines is the largest for the production of a classic champagne bottle method. Unique venture "Artemsol" is mastering the richest deposits of rock salt.
Artemovsk city has a favorable geographic location at the crossroads of rail and road routes. There are rich deposits of rock salt, a unique deposit of refractory clays and pure gypsum on the nearby territories.

Artemovsk is one of the main scientific, cultural and sports centers of Donetsk oblast. First Donbass region Drama Theater, library, museum appeared here. Today there are 14 educational institutions in Artemovsk with over 10,000 students studying 86 professions. Among these institutions are the oldest in the region schools of music, teachers training, medicine, industrial and railway technical schools.
Also there is the only among the counties of former Soviet Union "The Institute of Salt Industry" and the largest in Ukraine Geological Association "Donetskgeology".
The regional fair "Bakhmutsky Shlyakh" is going annually in Artemovsk city. Also at the depth of 300 meters in the salt mine of "Artemsol" company a unique festival of arts "Salt Symphony" is being conducted. There are unique speleo-sanatoriums located at mine workings that treat diseases of the respiratory tract.
In recent years Artemovsk received a modern European look. Bit this ancient Ukrainian city has preserved its face, the originality, its importance not only in the Donbas region, but in the whole Ukraine.
