Odessa catacombs are similar to the catacombs under Paris. They were used to mine limestone for construction of the entire city. These man-made caves are not visited by tourists. Photos by Denis Mukimov

Odessa – bird’s-eye view

Odessa is probably one of the most famous Ukrainian cities known also as the “Pearl of the South”. However, you are unlikely to have seen this Odessa before. Flying over the city, especially at a relatively low altitude, is prohibited.

It is clearly seen that the city is chaotically built up with skyscrapers – Soviet and modern. And on the coast, cottages and hotels are standing almost on the sand. Photos by Vitaliy Milevich

The “color” photos of Odessa in 1931

In 1931, American photographer Branson DeCou visited Odessa and made a number of black-and-white photos, then he painted his slides. What was the need to paint the slides in the age of color photography is a mystery.

Obviously, he was rather an artist than a photographer. Branson tried to reproduce original colors on his slides.

These colorful slides could serve as an excellent illustration of the famous novel “The Golden Calf”, because its action took place in Odessa about this time. Pictures by visualhistory

Odessa, a wonderful city standing on the Black Sea coast, is often called the “Pearl of the South”. Odessa has special architectural style and ambiance.

Fortunately, most of the marvelous buildings that went up in Odessa during the 18th and 19th centuries were only partially damaged during the Second World War. That means Odessa retains the charm of yesteryear.

Odessa residents are known to be hospitable, warmhearted, independent, proud – and to possess a sophisticated sense of humor. Odessa city holds festivals of humor and satire every year on April 1.

On the first anniversary of the death of Steve Jobs, a monument to him was installed in Odessa. More precisely, it is a sculpture dedicated not so much to Steve Jobs himself but to his brainchild, the company Apple. Two-meter hand was made from scrap metal by local craftsman Cyril Maksimenko.

The author used numerous gears, screws, bearings and other small parts of bicycles, motorcycles, and cars. The whole process took almost a year. This is the first monument to Steve Jobs and Apple in the CIS (former USSR countries). Photos by Vitaliy Milevich

A lot of the houses of Odessa have not only external facade charm, but also unique inner worlds. After one step inside you find yourself in completely different worlds inaccessible to most eyes – the worlds of front doors, stairs, and staircases.

They really do not look like each other. They are not always clean and pleasant smelling, they are not always easily accessible, but they are always fraught with mystery opening the hidden pages of Odessa life. Photos by Anton Polyakov.
