Drohobych (other spellings: Drogobych, Drogobich, Drohobich) is a city located in Lvov oblast of Ukraine, administrative center of Drohobych district. Drohobych city is situated at the confluence of Seret and Tysmenytsia rivers about 90 km from Lvov city by highway.

Drohobych Ukraine city history

First mentioning of Drohobych settlement was in Lvov city records in 1387. In 1392 first Latin Catholic church construction began on the foundations of ancient Ruthenian buildings. Drohobych town received Magdeburg right in the 15th century. That time it was a significant center of salt industry.

Drohobych town was captured by Cossacks during the Khmelnytsky Uprising in 1648. A lot of Poles, Uniates and Jews were killed. Austria received Drohobych after the partition of Poland in 1772. The town became large center of oil and natural gas industries after the discovery of oil and natural gas resources in the region.

The region of Drohobych town became the part of Poland again after the World War I. Ukrainian private gymnasium was opened in Drohobych in 1928. The population of the town was about 40,000 at the end of 1920th. Drohobych city had one of the largest oil refinery (Polmin) in Europe.

The territories of Poland Republic were divided again between Nazi Germany and USSR in September, 1939. Drohobych city region was attached to USSR and became the administrative center of Drohobych oblast. The town was captured by Nazi Germany army soon after the beginning of war against USSR in July, 1941. That time Drohobych city had large Jewish community. Large ghetto was formed and later, in June 1943, liquidated by Nazis.

Drohobych city remained the status of Drohobych oblast center after the World War II until 1959 when the oblast became the part of Lvov oblast of Ukrainian SSR. Drohobych city was playing an important role in Ukrainian economy during Soviet times having developed food, light, machine building, oil-refining and woodworking industries.
