Kamenets Podolskiy (also spelled Kamenets Podolsky, Kamianets Podilskyi, Kamyanets Podilsky) is a city situated in Khmelnitsky oblast (region) of Ukraine, about 101 km from region administrative center Khmelnitsky city. Kamenets Podolskiy is one of the most ancient cities of Ukraine.

Kamenets Podolskiy was first time mentioned in 1062. That time it was a fortress of Kievan Rus state. Mongol Tatar forces destroyed Kamenets Podolskiy fortress in 1241. Polish state army captured town in 1352. Kamenets Podolskiy town fortress was expanded and reconstructed to defend Polish state from the southwest. The castle was continually enlarged and in the 17th century it became the strongest in the Polish-Lithuanian state. Various iron cannon balls can be still found in the ruins of the castle as a result of numerous sieges.

In 1793, after the Second Partition of Poland, Kamenets Podolskiy town became the part of Russian Empire and capital of Podolskaya Guberniya. Peter the Great, famous Russian Tsar, visited Kamenets Podolskiy fortress two times and was impressed by its fortifications. In 1915 Kamenets Podolskiy was captured by Austria-Hungary army. After the October revolution of 1917, Kamenets Podolskiy was part of several short-lived Ukrainian states. After the Russian Civil War Kamenets Podolskiy city was joined to Ukrainian SSR under the Soviet Power. In 1941 one of the first and largest mass murders of Holocaust (about 23,600 victims) occurred near Kamenets Podolskiy city.
