Ukrainian egg decorating tradition thrives at festival in Sharon. You can find it at a little studio next to Billy’s Black and Gold, a bar on Sharpsville Avenue in Sharon. You can find it Sunday at the 19th annual Egg Festival, which Billy’s will host along with help from St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. You can find it at the hands of Carol Novosel, who owns Billy’s and has been decorating the eggs in a Ukrainian tradition that uses wax and dye since she was around 5 years old. The tradition was passed down through the generations in her family.
Novosel’s studio on Sharpsville is full of eggs she’s decorated in preparation for selling them at the festival. Proceeds will benefit the church, which is going to be there, too —selling food that includes pieroghi, stuffed cabbage, halushki, chicken Kiev and baked goods.
The money will also go toward helping orphanages and children’s hospitals in the Ukraine, which is still feeling the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster from April 1986.

Actress Jessica Simpson is in demand in the Ukraine following the success of her latest film in cinemas there.
Blonde Ambition was a flop in the U.S., where it made just over $1,000 (£500) at the box office during its opening weekend in December.
The movie, which also stars Luke Wilson, was pulled from theatres, but it has been reborn in the Ukraine, where it's become a surprise hit.
And now local film bosses want Simpson to consider a trip to the country, where she has become an overnight sensation.
Film producer Alex Shpiluk, a member of the Ukrainian Film Commission, tells In Touch magazine, "She is really the ideal of American beauty and style, like Barbie. She would be useful to us and our image." And Arama Gevorcyan, another leading Ukrainian film producer, has gone so far as to invite Simpson to be the guest of honour at a September movie celebration in the Eastern European country.

An initiative called “St. Nicholas for the Unborn” was conducted near the bronze Statute of Oranta, the Mother of God in the center of western Ukrainian Lviv. The event’s objective, according to the Institute of Marriage and Family Life at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv, was to attract public attention to the tragic fate of unborn children deprived of their right to live, to be able to receive presents, enjoy a Christmas tree and Christmas holidays.
The initiative stressed that there is enough material welfare, financial capacity and presents in the world, but that all of these are useless if parents and neighbors are not generous and deprive children of the greatest gift of God, which is life.
According to Natalia Tsiupka, organizer of the event, preparation for the prayer initiative was actively supported by youth communities, the Institute of Marriage and Family Life at UCU and the students of the Holy Spirit Seminary of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). A central symbolic act during the event was the placing of toys near the statue, meant to communicate to the public that the unborn child is a person who needs care, love and prayer.
