Oleksandriya (other spellings Aleksandriya, Oleksandriia, Oleksandria) is a city of regional significance located in Kirovograd oblast of Ukraine, administrative center of Oleksandriya district. Oleksandriya is standing between the rivers Ingulets and Beryozovka about 75 km northeast of Kirovograd city almost in the center of Ukraine.

Oleksandriya is divided into two parts: northern and southern. The climate of the area is moderate. Summers are long and hot, winters are short and almost without snow. There are two forests within the city limits with the total area of about 370 hectares.

Oleksandriya city population is about 92,000 (2009) on the land area of 55 sq. km.

Oleksandriya city, Ukraine history

Since its foundation in 1784 Oleksandriya was a fortified settlement standing on the way of Tatars' raids and campaigns. Since 1806 Oleksandriya was a part of Kherson province. The main occupations of the people of the town and of surrounding villages in the first half of 19th century were agriculture, gardening and melons growing.

In 1855 the telegraph line from Petersburg to Odessa passed through Oleksandriya. The favorable geographical location at the crossroads leading to the Black Sea and Crimea positively influenced the development of trade cases in Oleksandriya. In the early 20th century the industrial production in Oleksandriya was emerging: there were machine shops, small shops of iron castings. At the same time the first attempt of industrial development of brown coal deposits was made.

In 1917-1920, the town of Oleksandriya experienced social upheaval and civil war. For years before the World War II Oleksandriya got developed industry: mechanical plant and brown-coal mines were built. Notable changes occurred in the cultural life of the city. The school of nurses and school teachers, cultural and technical schools, Pioneers Palace, Drama Theatre were opened.

August 6, 1941 German troops occupied Oleksandriya. December 6, 1943 the city was liberated by Soviet forces. In the postwar years Oleksandriya became the city of miners and machine building. During the period of 1951-1981 about 20 industrial enterprises of various types were built.

On August 1, 2003 the second speed rail line Kyiv-Dnipropetrovsk was opened. The line is running through Oleksandriya. That is why the new building of the railway station was constructed recently.

Industrial enterprises play the most important role in the economics of present day Oleksandriya. Brown coal extraction industry takes the leading position in the structure of industrial production.

Oleksandriya gave the world a lot of famous people. The Hero of the Soviet Union Pyotr Koshevoy, cosmonaut Leonid Popov, a scholar of Slavic world Dmitry Chizhevsky were born there.

Among the main places of interest of Oleksandriya is the local museum opened in June 1967. In the museum you can see unique exhibits: paleontological and archaeological findings, numismatic collections, unique photos, arms, the things of astronauts visited the space, orders, medals, albums, books. In recent years, the museum organized over 100 exhibitions of various themes.
