Romny is one of the oldest cities of Ukriane. The settlement was first time mentioned in written source in 1096. The population of Romny reached 6,000 by 1638. That time it was the largest town in the region. In 1782 the town received its coat of arms approved by Russian Tsarina Catherine the Second. Romny town was also known in the neighboring territories as the home place of various fairs.
