Shostka city is located in Sumy oblast (region) of Ukraine, the administrative center of Shostka district. The city lies on the river with the same name Shostka (Desna river tributary). Shostka city is also known as "homeland" of Mousekewitz family from "An American Tail" animated movie.

Shostka Ukraine city history

The first mentioning of Shostka settlement is coming from the beginning of 17th century. That time it was a village populated by Ukrainian Cossacks. Later, in 1739, the gunpowder factory was built in Shostka. Soon it became the main supplier of gunpowder in Russian Empire.

In 1893 Shostka village was connected by railway with other towns of the region. In 1920 Shostka received city status. Movie and photo film factory "Svema" was built in Shostka city in 1931. From that time it was supplying almost all regions of Soviet Union with movie and photo film.
