Stryi (Polish spelling Stryj, also spelled Striy) is a city located in Lviv oblast of Ukraine, the administrative center of Striy district.

The population of Striy is about 70,000 (2009) on the land area of 17 sq. km.

Stryi was first time mentioned in the year of 1385. In 1431 the town received the Magdeburg rights. The development of Stryi was affected by its favorable geographical location at the crossroads of the most important ways through the Carpathians (Lviv-Mukachevo) and latitude - to Carpathians. There was a large defensive castle in Stryi (demolished in the Austrian period). In the second half of XVII century Stryi town was on the top of its prosperity (the development of the town was assisted by King Jan Sobieski). Later, in the XVIII century Stryi town fell into decay.

In the period time from 1772 to 1918 Stryi town was the part of the Habsburgs lands (since 1804 - Austrian Empire) and was the county seat, later - the county town and the center of the district court. The population of Stryi consisted of Jews, Poles and Ukrainians - approximately one third for each nation. Stryi city had commercial and administrative and industrial nature of the economy, its main business was loco-car-repair shops. On the outskirts of the city the population was engaged in agriculture.

The national composition of the population of Stryi city in 1939: Poles - 34,5%, Ukrainians - 28,0%, Jews - 35.6%, Germans - 1,6%. German army occupied the city in July 2, 1941. During the occupation of Stryi almost the entire Jewish population of the city was killed. During the Soviet period, the industry of the city grew rapidly and the population increased. The national composition of Stryi city population in the postwar period in 1959: Ukrainians - 68%, Russians - 30%, other nations - 2%.

Stryi is an important railway junction in the western part of Ukraine. Near the town the old airport is situated (a former military, now - a ruined and partially transferred to the ownership of private commercial entities). There are several plants: car repair, smith-forming equipment, concrete structures, glass making; factories: cloth, clothing, footwear, wood processing; food industry.

In 2003 in Stryi city the construction of the plant manufacturer of electrical cable systems for cars was completed. The plant belongs to the German company Leoni AG (the planned number of employees - 4500-4800; investments - 35-40 millions of Euro).

There is a network of the following art institutions in Stryi city: the school of arts, children's music school, the center for children and young people, middle school, 13 schools, agricultural college, four vocational-technical schools, the museum of local history "Verkhovyna" with the subsections: Memorial complex "Fighters for freedom of Ukraine", Peter Obal Museum, Olga Bachinsky Museum and the exhibition hall. There is also a museum of beekeeping of Carpathian region.
