The first written mention of the region was in the Kiev Chronicle, dated by the year of 1190, as a place of hunting of princes. The historical predecessor of Svetlovodsk city, Krylov fortified town was founded in June 1615. Krylov had a strategic position, controlling the crossing of two rivers.
In 1822, Krylov was renamed in Novo-Georgievsk. Later the town was moved out from the area, because the territory was flooded after the construction of water reservoir for Kremenchug hydroelectric station. The construction of the station began in April 1954.
Simultaneously with the construction of the hydroelectric power station the construction of the settlement for station builders began. The basic blocks of the settlement were placed along the Kremenchug water reservoir at a high Taburischansk cape covered with forests. The basis of the architectural structure of the city was rectangular network of the streets.
In 1956 the construction site of the Kremenchug hydroelectric station was visited by famous Ukrainian film director and writer Alexander Dovzhenko. In 1961, the village of the station builders and transferred from the zone of flooding Novo-Georgievsk town merged into one city. The city was named Khrushchev - after Nikita Khrushchev, who at that time was the leader of the USSR, in spite of the fact that according to the initiative of N.Khrushchev it was forbidden to give the cities names of the living leaders of the country.
In summer 1962 N. Khrushchev visited the new town and the next day the newspapers came out with the information that the First Secretary of the CPSU Khrushchev visited the city KremGES. It was the name of the city until 1969, when it was renamed in Svetlovodsk.
