Khmelnitsky oblast belongs to small oblasts of Ukraine, with its area 3.4% of the territory of the country. Khmelnitsky region is also sometimes spelled like Khmelnytskyi, Khmelnitski and Khmelnytsky.
Khmelnitsky region stretches for 220 km from the north to the south and for 120 km from the east to the west. Khmelnitsky oblast is located in the southwest of the East European plain in the forest steppe and mixed forest zones of Polissya (Woodland) region.

Khmelnitsky oblast borders on Ternopil, Rivne, Zhitomir, Vinnitsa, and Chernivtsi oblasts of Ukraine. Khmelnitsky region is crossed by most important railways and highways. The largest cities of Khmelnitsky oblast are Khmelnitsky (the oblast's center) and Kamyanets-Podilsky. Other towns of Khmelnitsky oblast are small as to their population.
Khmelnitsky oblast is rich in mineral resources. State importance mineral resources include limestone and clays for manufacture of cement, limestone for the sugar industry. New mineral resource types - graphite, saponite, glauconite, phosphorites, and facing granites - have also been prospected. Khmelnitsky oblast has large resources of medicinal and table water.
