Zakarpattia oblast has a unique geographical position. The region is situated in the far southwest of Ukraine. It occupies the southeastern part of Ukrainian Carpathians and Danube lowland. Other names of the region are Zakarpatska, Podkarpatska, Transcarpathian, Transcarpathia, Zakarpattya.
Zakarpattia oblast borders on Lvov and Ivano-Frankovsk oblasts in the north and southeast, while in the north, west and south Zakarpattia region borders on Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Zakarpattia oblast capital is Uzhgorod city.

By the force of its geographic peculiarities, Zakarpattia oblast was always a convenient link between the states of Northern and Southern, Eastern and Western Europe. The position on the junction of several states, on international transit routes permits Zakarpattia oblast to play a great part in Ukraine integration to European structures and favors its active participation in international division of labor.
