Zhitomir or Zhytomyr (Ukrainian spelling) is a city and administrative center of Zhitomir oblast (region) of Western Ukraine. Zhitomir city lies along the Teterev River where the latter runs between high, rocky banks. Zhitomir is a railway and highway junction and has an airport.

Zhitomir is believed to date from the 9th century, but the first record of it is from 1240, when Zhitomir settlement was sacked by Tatars. In the 1340s Zhitomir was ruled by feudal Lithuania, according Lyublin union of 1569 - by Poland.
In 1793 Zhitomir became the part of Russia, since 1804 Zhitomir city is the center of Volynsk guberniya. Soviet power was established in Zhitomir in 1918. During Civil war (1918-1920) it was won by Polish troops and was set free in 1920. Since 1937 Zhitomir city is the center of Zhitomir oblast.

Before revolution Zhitomir city had several small plants. Also Zhitomir was a seat of provincial government.
Modern Zhitomir city is an important junction where the main rail and road routs westward from Kiev are crossed by north-south routes.
The main heavy industries of Zhitomir are machine-building and metal-working. Zhitomir city light industries chiefly process wood for furniture and flax for linen. Synthetic fibres are a recent extension of the Zhitomir textile industry. Musical instruments, notably accordions, are a specialty of Zhitomir.

A lot of outstanding personalities were born in Zhitomir: writer V.G.Korolenko, pianist S.T.Rihter, space researcher and engineer S.P.Korolyov. A famous Russian writer A.I.Kuprin lived in Zhitomir. V.V.Mayakovsky visited Zhitomir city in 1928.
