Lubny is a city located in Poltava oblast (region) of Ukraine, administrative center of Lubny district. Lubny city is an important cultural and industrial center of the region. Among the main products of Lubny are various kinds of bread, meat, milk and furniture.

Lubny Ukraine city history

Lubny is in the list of oldest Ukrainian cities. The settlement was probably founded in 988 by Kiev prince Vladimir the Great. Lubny was first time mentioned in written sources in 1107. For the first period of its history Lubny was a small wooden fortress standing on Sula River. The settlement was growing quickly and in 16th century it was a town ruled by Magdeburg rights having its own coat of arms.

By the 17th century Lubny town was one of the largest in the region. The population of Lubny was about 2,600 in 1638. Lubny town was Cossack Regiment headquarters from 1648 to 1781. Lubny was connected with other cities of the region by railway in 1901. During the World War II, after being captured by Nazi Germany army, Lubny was major center of resistance movement.

The main attraction of Lubny is Mharsky Monastery located near the city including six-pillared cathedral (Ukrainian Baroque style) built in 1684-1692 and belltower finished in 1844. Among the other attractions of Lubny are several art galleries and museums.
