Nizhyn (Nezhin - Russian spelling) is a town located in Chernigov oblast (region) of Ukraine, the administrative center of Nizhyn area. Nizhyn city is situated along the Oster river about 80 km from Chernigov city and 130 km from Kiev city.

Nizhyn city was first time mentioned in 1147. That time the settlement was called Unenezh. In 1625 Nizhyn became a self-governing town according to Magdeburg rights. In 19th century Nizhyn town received the status of capital of one of Chernigov Guberniya uyezds. Famous Russian writer Nikolai Gogol graduated Nizhyn city lyceum established in 1805.
Nizhyn city is also known for its tasty cucumbers (there is even a monument dedicated to Nizhyn cucumber on one of city streets). Nizhyn city is in the list of Ukraine's ancient cities. The architecture of Nizhyn city gives an opportunity to see the usual Russian trade city of the past. There are about 300 ancient buildings (70 buildings are of a great cultural and historical value) on the territory of Nizhyn city.
