In 1730, prince S.N. Terentyev purchased small settlements Ovrag Kammeny and Protok Gritsenkov, he brought his peasants there, built houses and founded a village Lozovaya named after the river Lozovaya.
In 1763, Krasnopolyevskaya village was founded by Krasnopol landowner who also brought his peasants to this new village.
In 1776, a Serbian Pavel Miokovich was granted a piece of fertile land near the river Lozovaya, he founded a large settlement there and called it Pavlovka after his own name.
The villages Lozovaya, Pavlovka and Petrovka located close to each other rapidly grew and, in 1787, they formed a large settlement Lozovaya Pavlovka.
Fertile lands and pastures favored crops production as well as distilling, wool-spinning, butter-making and folk handicrafts - cooperage, blacksmith’s work, sewing, weaving and trading. Crowded fairs and markets were held in Lozovaya Pavlovka.
There were a lot of workshops and small producers’ artels (associations for common work), they determined creation of Lozovopavlovskaya volost (small rural district). For this purpose administrative buildings of the volost center were built in Lozovaya Pavlovka.
Historically and economically the town developed as a miners’ town. The whole social and economic situation is determined mainly by this fact. The industry is coal oriented.
The first coal mines started operating in 1851 as well as several coke plants which entailed developing of settlements.
Till 1995, there were 12 coal mines in the city, in 2006, only 3 mines were still open.
