Antratsit overview
Antratsit (other spelling Antratsyt) is a city located in Lugansk oblast of Ukraine near Ukrainian border with Russia about 90 km southwest of Lugansk city and 130 km to the north-east of Donetsk. The city is an administrative center of Antratsit district.
Three railway stations (Antratsit, Karakhash and Shetovo) of Donetsk Railway are situated on the territory of the city. There is also international bus station in Antratsit city.
The population of Antratsit city is about 78,000 (2010) on the territory of 33 sq.km.

Antratsit history
The territory of Antratsitovsky district was inhabited over 30,000 years B.C., the fact which is proved by archeological finds, nomad graves of Saltovsky culture, numerous burial mounds in Antratsit outskirts. After devastating nomad campaigns from Kimmerians to Polovets and Tatar-Mongols the territory was uninhabited and was called “The Wild field”.
It was only at the end of 16th - early 17th centuries that the first sentry posts of Zaporozhye and Don Cossacks were built there and runaway peasants began inhabiting the area and developing agriculture.
Antratsit settlement appeared near small Gayevskogo mine in 1895. The settlement received its name because of the deposits of “antratsit” (ancient coal) found in the area. In 1904 “Bokovsky anthracite” mine was constructed, in 1912 - Kolberg mine.
In 1920 future town received its official name Bokovo-Antracit. In 1936 the town received the status of administrative center of the district. In 1962 the city was again renamed and received its current name - Antratsit. Today the city is an important center of Ukrainian coal extraction.

Antratsit features
The city of Antratsit is located in north-eastern part of Donetsky mountain ridge (Nagolny mountain ridge) on the highway “Kharkov - Rostov-on-Don”. Antratsit is located in a picturesque steppe place not far from the frontier with Russia.
The climate of the territory is of moderate continental type. Summers are hot, average temperature in July varies from 21,8 to 35 degs C above zero; winters are cold, average temperature in January varies from 6 to 15 degs C below zero.
In the city of Antratsit the coal is mined; also there are plants repairing mine equipment as well as food and light industry processing plants.
The product of coal industry (4 mines, 2 concentrating mills) makes about 73% of all industrial output of the city.
Antratsit attractions
Antratsit residents are proud of their fellow countrymen: cosmonaut, Hero of the Soviet Union, V.A. Lyakhov, Olympic champion in gymnastics I. Korobchinskiy, People’s Artist of the Soviet Union B. Rudenko, writers Taras Rybas, Vladislav Titov, Gregory Tyutyunnik and many others.
In the central library of Antratsit there is an Internet center. You can use its’ services for free.
Main educational facilities of Antratsit include the Branch of Kharkov National University of Radio Electronics and the Branch of the Eastern Ukrainian National University. Also there are 29 schools, music school in the city.

- Tank T-34 monument. The tank was the pride of Red Army during the World War II. The monument is located near the Palace of Culture on Menzhinsky Str.
- The building of Palace of Culture. It is the cultural center of Antratsit.
- Antratsit museum of local history. The museum is located in the new building, constructed in 2005 opposite the Palace of Culture.
- Eternal Flame. The memorial was erected to honor the victims of the World War II.
- Shevchenko movie theater.
- The monument to local miners.
- Chernobyl disaster monument.
