Stakhanov overview
Stakhanov (also spelled Stahanov) city is located in Lugansk oblast of Ukraine. In 1937-1940 the city had name Sergo and before 1937 and in 1940-1978 - Kadievka. Stakhanov was named after famous Soviet miner Alexey Stakhanov who began his career in the city.
Stakhanov is situated in the western part of Lugansk oblast about 63 km by highway and 91 km by railway from Lugansk city. Main industries of Stakhanov are mining, mechanical engineering, rail car building, ferroconcrete items production. There is railway station “Stakhanov” located about 7 km from the city border.

Stakhanov history
The history of Stakhanov began in 1814 when the settlement Andreyevka was founded. In the first quarter of 19th century coal was found in the area of current Stakhanov. In 1890 there were 5 joint-stock coal mining companies. In 1894 a sugar-making plant owner Shubin founded the mine #1 “Karl”.
In autumn 1896 the first coal was produced at the mine #1. Since 1898 Shubinka was called Kadiyevka. The same year a metallurgical plant was founded near station Almaznaya and in 1899 its first blast-furnace was put into process.
In 1932 Kadiyevka received the status of a town. On August 30th night, 1935, the miner Alexey Stakhanov broke the world record and mined 102 tons of coal within 5 hours and 45 minutes, it was 14 times more than usual. So Stakhanovskoye movement came into being.
On February 15th, 1978, Kadiyevka was renamed into Stakhanov in order to commemorate the outstanding miner Alexey Grigoryevich Stakhanov. A monument to A.Stakhanov was erected in the town for the 50th anniversary of Stakhanovskoye movement.

Stakhanov economy
Main industries of Stakhanov are as follows: mining metallurgy and metal-working, machine-building, chemical, food, light, production of other non-metal items, distribution of power energy, gas, water and heating.
Till 1995 Stakhanov was considered a miners’ town. But in 1995-1998 all the four mines were closed according to the program of coal industry reorganization. Metallurgy and metal working are the main industries in Stakhanov now.
Joint-stock “Stakhanovsky plant of ferroalloys” is the largest plant not only in the city but in the whole region.

Stakhanov attractions
In Stakhanov there is a museum of history and arts. It numbers 54,800 exhibits of historical department and 2,200 exhibits of art department. Now there are the following exhibitions:
- “Old Kadiyevka”;
- “History of the town in 1917-1950s”;
- “History of Stakhanov movement”;
- “Stakhanov and present time”;
- “Ukrainian decorative and applied arts”.
Stakhanov palace of culture named after Gorky is a monument of architecture, one of the most beautiful buildings in the region. The palace is the heart of the city.
In Stakhanov recreation park “Gornyak” there are a lot of attractions, small shops, a cozy children’s and a sports ground. Reconstructed bowl of Stakhanov pond is filled with water so the citizens can rest out of doors while staying in the city.
