Stakhanov history

The history of Stakhanov began in 1814 when the settlement Andreyevka was founded. In the first quarter of 19th century coal was found in the area of current Stakhanov. In 1890 there were 5 joint-stock coal mining companies. In 1894 a sugar-making plant owner Shubin founded the mine #1 “Karl”.

In autumn 1896 the first coal was produced at the mine #1. Since 1898 Shubinka was called Kadiyevka. The same year a metallurgical plant was founded near station Almaznaya and in 1899 its first blast-furnace was put into process.

In 1932 Kadiyevka received the status of a town. On August 30th night, 1935, the miner Alexey Stakhanov broke the world record and mined 102 tons of coal within 5 hours and 45 minutes, it was 14 times more than usual. So Stakhanovskoye movement came into being.

On February 15th, 1978, Kadiyevka was renamed into Stakhanov in order to commemorate the outstanding miner Alexey Grigoryevich Stakhanov. A monument to A.Stakhanov was erected in the town for the 50th anniversary of Stakhanovskoye movement.

The closest major city is Lugansk and there is Lugansk International Airport but the only international flight is to Moscow unfortunately, there is also flight available from Kiev to Lugansk so you have a choice either to fly to Kiev city international airport (Borispol) and have a flight to Lugansk from there or after arriving to Kiev have a train/bus to Lugansk.
