Borispol overview

Borispol (also spelled Boryspol, Boryspil, Borispil) is a city located in Kiev oblast of Ukraine. Borispol is an administrative center of Borispol district. It is the city where main Ukrainian international airport (Borispol International Airport - KBP) is located.

The airport is situated about five kilometers from the city. Economically and geographically Borispol is conveniently located at the distance of 38 km from south-eastern railway station of Kiev, in the direction of the highway Kiev - Kharkov.

Borispol has the population of about 59,000 (2012) on the territory of 37 sq. km.

Borispol history

Borispol is one of the oldest towns in Kiev region which in chronicles is known as Letch, Lto, Olto. The first record of Borispol refers to the early 11th century when in the war of 1015-1019 the son of the prince Vladimir prince Boris was killed on the river Alta. In 1117, Vladimir Monomakh built a stone church in that place. Letch was destroyed by Tatar-Mongols in 1239.

In 1508, the territory of Borispol belonged to Pustynno-Nikolayevsky monastery which possessed it till the end of the 16th century. Apparently then the town received its current name. Borispol was mentioned in Polish documents in 1590. In 1596, Polish king Sigizmund III added Borispol to his property.

From 1623 to 1648 Borispol belonged to magnates Zholkevsky. During Polish ruling Borispol was granted Magdeburg law. Boripol was destroyed several times in Russian-Polish war of 1654-1667. After the war the territory was passed to Russian state. At the end of the 19th century Borispol numbered about 5,000 inhabitants.

During Russian Civil War the power in Borispol was taken by opposite sides a lot of times. Finally, in 1921, Soviet power established there and Borispol became a part of Kiev oblast. In 1923, it became the center of Borispol district. In 1965, an international airport was opened in Borispol.

Borispol is crossed by a highway Kiev - Kharkov, by a railway and there is also State international airport “Borispol” - the largest in Ukraine. It provides regular flights to 40 countries of the world and has connection with 74 cities of the world. Over 140 flights are made within 24 hours.

“Borispol” airport is one of the most important centers in Central Europe. Borispol is the largest air gates of Ukraine and an important transportation juncture of national importance. The airport has an international certificate and is a real member of the International council of airports in Europe (ACE).

The industry in Borispol is presented by food production as well as construction materials, plastic doors and windows manufacturing.

The author of the words of Ukrainian national anthem “Sche ne vmerla Ukraina” Pavel Platonovich Chubinsky was born, lived and worked there.
