Boryspil is one of the oldest settlements of the Kyiv region known in the chronicles as Letch, Lto, Olto. The first written mention of it refers to the beginning of the 11th century, when during the fratricidal war (1015-1019) between the sons of Grand Prince Vladimir of Kiev, Prince Boris was killed on the Alta River.
In 1072, he was canonized and became one of the first saints of Kievan Rus. The present name of the city is directly connected with the name of Boris (Borys in Ukrainian). In 1117, on the site of the death of Boris, Prince Vladimir Monomakh built a stone church.
In 1154, Letch was mentioned to as a fortified settlement, which stood on a hill between the two arms of the Alta River. The terrain was marshy and wooded. During the time of Kievan Rus, Letch was not only a fortification on the border of Kiev and Pereyaslav principality, but also a place for changing horses and resting place for various embassies, messengers, princes’ squads, and princes.
In 1239, during the Mongol invasion, Letch was completely destroyed. In the 13th century, these lands came under the control of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1508, the territory of Boryspil passed into the possession of the Desert-Nicholas Monastery, which owned it until the end of the 16th century. Most likely, Boryspil got its present name in this period.
After 1569, when the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was formed, this territory that used to belong to the Lithuanians came under the control of the Poles. In 1590, Boryspil was for the fist time mentioned as a town. In 1596, Sigismund III of Poland made Boryspil, which at that time was already a significant settlement, its royal estate.
At the end of the 17th century, Boryspil became a fairly large town with two gates and several streets. In the 18th century, the town turned into an important economic center. This was also facilitated by the fact that the road from Kiev to Poltava passed here.
In 1802, Boryspil became the center of the Pereyaslav district of the Poltava province of the Russian Empire. In the late 19th century, it was a relatively large trading town with a population of about 9 thousand people. There was a large Jewish community with its own cemetery.
During the Civil War on the territory of the former Russian Empire, the power in Boryspil changed several times. In 1921, Soviet power was established in Boryspil, the town became part of the Kiev region. In 1923, it became a district center.
September 23, 1941, during the Second World War, Boryspil was occupied by German troops. On the territory of the airfield, until October 1942, a prisoner of war camp was functioning. September 23, 1943, the Red Army liberated Boryspil. Immediately after the liberation, restoration work began. By 1950, the restoration was generally complete.
In 1959, the population of Boryspil reached 17.2 thousand people. In 1965, the first passengers arrived at the new Boryspil airport. In the early 1970s, Boryspil began to develop intensively: a residential area for gas pipeline builders appeared, as well as new residential areas where the airport employees lived. In 1989, the population of Boryspil reached 50 thousand people.
In 2015, the 1000th anniversary of Boryspil was celebrated at the state level.

It is the only airport in Ukraine, which has a transcontinental status. Boryspil International Airport serves more than 12 million national and foreign passengers annually.
The airport is located about 29 km south-east of Kyiv and 6 km from the center of Boryspil. Passenger terminals and the railway station “Boryspil-airport” are located on the territory of the city of Boryspil, and the runways are located within the Boryspil district of the Kyiv region.

Boryspil State Historical Museum. The museum is located in a building of original architecture built specifically for the museum in the 1980s. Knyshov Park. The Knyshov Memorial Park Complex in Boryspil was created on the territory of the historic cemetery in 2007. A lot of famous people were buried here: Decembrist V. Lukashevich, ethnographer, folklorist, and author of the words of the Ukrainian anthem P. Chubynsky, hero of the Soviet Union M. Babkin.
