Krasnodon city is the capital and administrative center of Krasnodon area located in Lugansk oblast of Ukraine. Krasnodon is situated in the southeastern part of Lugansk oblast, about 50 km from Lugansk city on Bolshaya Kamenka river.

Krasnodon Ukraine city history

Krasnodon was founded in 1914. That time it was called Sorokino. Soon the town became one of the centers of Donbass region coal mining industry. In 1938 the town received new name - Krasnodon.

During World War II the city was captured by Germany forces in July, 1942. Krasnodon was liberated by Soviet army in February, 1943. During the occupation anti-fascist organization "Young Guard" was operating in Krasnodon city. There are several monuments and memorials dedicated to this organization on the territory of the city.
