Sumy oblast is situated in the northeast part of Ukraine. On the North and the East Sumy region borders on the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod oblasts of Russia. On the South, the southeast and the West Sumy oblast borders on the Kharkiv, Poltava and Chernigov oblasts of Ukraine.

The Sumy oblast was established on January 10, 1939. Sumy oblast center is the town of Sumy founded four centuries ago. Sumy city boasts high tech industrial works, unique cathedrals with beautiful fountains, institutions of higher learning, nice recreation areas.
