The Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, built in 1904-1909, is one of the architectural attractions of the small town of Sokal with a population of about 20 thousand people located about 85 km from Lviv, in the very north of Lviv Oblast in western Ukraine. At the beginning of the 20th century, the need arose to build a church in Sokal, since the size of the Ukrainian community of the town was relatively large, but there was no church for them. At that time, this region was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The famous Lviv architect Vasyl Nahirny was involved in the development of the church project. He found in the archives of the city of Marseille a plan of one of the local churches, which he took as a model.
The length of the newly built church, which then became the largest in Sokal, was 52 m, width – 26 m, height – 46 m. In 1909, Emperor Franz Joseph I gave personal permission to grant the church the name of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
