The resort city of Berdyansk in early summer

Berdyansk, a city with a population of about 114 thousand people in the Zaporozhye region, is a marine, climatic and mud resort of national importance.

It is located on the eastern shore of the Berdyansk Bay in the northern part of the Azov Sea. The water in this part of the Azov Sea remains warm until late autumn. There are no sharp temperature swings, as in the Black Sea. Photos by: Alexey Novik.

Popov’s Castle is an eclectic era manor house built in 1864-1884. The estate is located 36 km to the south of Zaporozhye in Vasilevka town, which received its name in honor of the founder of the town – Major-General Vasily Stepanovich Popov.

At the end of the 18th century, Vasily Stepanovich Popov founded a settlement on this territory. Half a century later, his grandson Vasily Pavlovich Popov built the castle, which houses a museum now. Photos by Dmitry Gazin

Traveling from Dnepropetrovsk to Zaporozhye, it is hard not to pay attention to a complex of abandoned buildings and the old L-29 aircraft, placed at the control-point.

It is a flight training center named after Soviet pilot Alexander Pokryshkin. In Soviet times, it was a strong school, which trained combat pilots for three aviation regiments based in Zaporozhye. However, for more than ten years the place is deserted. Photos by sicheslavets
