Bell Tower of Saint Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv

The bell tower of Saint Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv is an architectural monument built in the style of the Ukrainian Baroque. It is one of the symbols of Kyiv and Ukraine.
This building was constructed on the means of Hetman Ivan Mazepa in 1699-1706. The component part of the National Reserve “Sophia of Kyiv”, the bell tower with a height of 76 meters is the vertical dominant of the Old Kyiv. Photos by: Alexey Novik.
The belfry, a monument of cultural heritage of national importance, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

27th November 2022, today I finished reading ‘A message from Ukraine’ by Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine and its heritage are worth fighting for against the tyranny of rf.
Having read his Easter Address of 24th April 2022 in which he specifically mentions the cathedral, I wanted to see it for myself. What a magnificent architectural achievement. Strangely I bought a second hand postcard in a charity shop last week which showed the ‘Boyan Ensemble of Kiev’and I wondered if a Ukranian friend of mine who lives in the USA for 20 years would know of them, the background to this postcard is St.Sophia’s Cathedral. It’s as inspiring(and there are so many ‘spires’ on the Cathedral!)as Zelensky’s speech.I live in Cornwall in the U.K.
