St. George’s Church in Drohobych

St. George’s Church located in the city of Drohobych, in the south of Lviv Oblast is a unique monument of Galician wooden architecture of the late 15th – early 16th centuries. It is one of the best preserved monuments of old Ukrainian sacral architecture.

In 2013, it was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the object “The wooden churches of the Carpathian region in Poland and Ukraine.” St. George’s Church in Drohobych on Google Maps. Photos by: Maxim Ritus.

The church was brought to Drohobych from the Carpathian village of Nadiiv in 1656. It was exchanged for salt, dismantled and transported to Drohobych on oxen. The building was installed on the site of the previous burned down church. In 1678, a bell tower was built next to it.
