Picturesque Old Houses of Mariupol

Mariupol is a large city located in the Donetsk region in the east of Ukraine, on the shore of the Azov Sea, a major seaport, as well as a climatic and mud resort. In 2016, Mariupol was recognized by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine as one of the most comfortable cities for living in the country.

Mariupol has a large number of interesting old buildings constructed in the 19th – first half of the 20th centuries. Unfortunately not all of them are in a well-preserved condition. Let’s look at some of them. Photos by: Evgeny Sosnovsky.

Vyshyvanka Day in Mariupol

The World Vyshyvanka Day is an international holiday celebrated to preserve the original folk traditions of making and wearing vyshyvanka – an embroidered shirt in Ukrainian national costume.

The holiday is held annually on the third Thursday of May. On this day everyone can join the holiday by wearing vyshyvanka for work, a university, a school, or even a kindergarten. Walking around Odessa in May

Izyum (literally meaning “raisins”), first mentioned in 1571, is a city with a population of about 50,000 people located in the southeast of the Kharkiv region, about 124 km from Kharkiv.

This city, standing on the banks of the Siverskyi Donets River and surrounded by forests, is the third largest city of the Kharkiv region. Mount Kremyanets located on the territory of Izyum is the highest point of the region (218 m).

Hlukhiv (Glukhov) is a small city with a population of about 33,000 people located in the north of Ukraine, 139 km northwest of Sumy, just 10 km from the border with Russia.

Kamianka-Buzka is a small town with a population of about 10 thousand people located in the Lviv region, 41 km north-east of Lviv. Here you can find several interesting monuments of architecture.

Gate Church of the Trinity in Kyiv

The Gate Church of the Trinity is an Orthodox church built above the Holy Gates of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv in 1106-1108. Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is one of the first monasteries of Kievan Rus and one of the most important Orthodox shrines.
