Ukraine is the largest country in Europe. Well, apart from Russia, but that country is not entirely in Europe. It seems there are few places left in the world to explore, but Ukraine provides travelers with a genuine last frontier that is full of warm-hearted locals and off-the-map sights that you will never forget.

The country has plenty to offer, from the beautiful Carpathian Mountains to the bustling city center of Kyiv and the beach parties of Odesa. However, if you are planning to travel widely across Ukraine, you will want to find ways of saving money on your trip. Thankfully, Ukraine has a host of affordable accommodations to choose from.

Hotels

When looking for budget accommodation options in Ukraine, you may not consider hotels. But there are actually plenty of Ukrainian hotels that are affordable. You will find lots of hotels in places like Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa that maintain the same high standards found in the best hotels of Europe, but which are much cheaper.

Campsites

Sleeping under canvas in the great outdoors is always a good affordable option. In Ukraine, most campsites are located on the outskirts of cities. The majority of campsite facilities are pretty basic, but some are much better equipped and have features like swimming pools.

Wild camping is also permitted in some rural mountainous areas, but check that camping is not restricted to a particular area before you pitch your tent. You can usually light campfires at Ukrainian campsites. Self-catering Apartments

If you are planning on staying in a Ukrainian city for a long stay, you will probably get better value for money by renting an apartment. Most cities have short-term affordable apartments available, and with the ability to self-cater, you can save money on eating out as well. Various private companies advertise short-term self-catering apartments in all major cities. Just make sure you inspect an apartment before you hand over your cash.

Rural Farmstay Accommodation

In recent times, rural farmstay accommodation has become much more widely available in Ukraine. You will especially find lots in the western Carpathian Mountains. This accommodation involves staying at someone’s home in a rural location. Most provide breakfast and all provide the opportunity to explore Ukrainian nature close up.

You also get to meet real-life rural-living Ukrainians, which not every traveler gets to experience. However, you may need to brush up on your foreign language skills, as the majority of hosts only speak Ukrainian. Staying at rural farmstay accommodation is a truly unique experience that you will never forget.

Homestays are also available in cities, but you will usually have to ask locals for recommendations as there is no organization responsible for homestays. Alternatively, look out for ads in windows that display the word “komnati,” which means “rooms.”
