Schonborn Palace, the former residence and hunting lodge of the Counts Schonborn and the sanatorium “Carpathians” (since 1946), is located near the city of Mukacheve in the Zakarpattia region.
The palace was built by the Count Erwin Friedrich Schonborn-Bukhgeim in neo-romantic style, combining Romanesque and Gothic motifs, in 1890-1895.
Interesting fact, this palace has 365 windows (the number of days in the year) and 12 entrances (the number of months in the year). The castle is decorated with rich decor (reliefs, weathervanes, stained glass).
In 1945, this land and the estate were nationalized and Schonborn hunting castle became the sanatorium “Carpathians”.
Part of the palace interior (furniture and other valuables) is exhibited in the Uzhgorod Museum of Local History. Schonborn Palace on Google Maps. Photos by: Maxim Ritus.
