Stunning Wooden Church in Danylovo

One of the main attractions of Danylovo, a village located on the territory of the Khust district of Zakarpattia Oblast, is a very picturesque wooden Church of St. Nicholas built in 1779.

This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful churches in Transcarpathia. Today, following restoration in 1968, it is one of the finest examples of 18th-century Carpathian wooden churches. Danylovo on Google Maps. Photos by: Maxim Ritus.

The unique features of this sacred structure include its unlikeness to typical Ukrainian churches. Rather, it can be compared to the Gothic cathedrals of Western Europe, the castle watchtowers of the Transylvanian plateau, or the fortified towns of Kievan Rus’.

The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Danylovo is an architectural monument of national significance. The composition of its forms emphasizes the rapid rise of its tower with its very tall spire: it seems that in just a moment, this wooden wonder will defy gravity.
