Beautiful Old Churches of Chernihiv

Chernihiv, first mentioned in 907, is the most northern regional center of Ukraine. The center of the historical region of Severia, it was one of the largest towns of Kievan Rus (882-1240).

Today, this city is known for its monuments of architecture. Some of them were built in the times of Kievan Rus, before the Mongol invasion. Photos by: Boyko O.D.

The Holy Mountains Lavra (Sviatohirsk Lavra), a monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), was first mentioned in written sources in 1526.

It is located in a picturesque place on the right high cretaceous bank of the Seversky Donets River (the so-called Holy Mountains) in Sviatohirsk, a small town in the north of the Donetsk region.

Monastery of St. Nicholas in Krekhiv

Krekhiv is a village with a population of about 800 people located in the Zhovkva district of the Lviv region, 35 km north-west of Lviv.

Zhuravnyky is a village with a population of about 800 people located in the Horokhiv district of the Volyn region, on the highway LvivLutsk. The village was previously a town and was called Druzhkopil.

Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra is an Orthodox monastery located in the town of Pochaiv in the Ternopil region. It is the largest Orthodox temple complex and monastery in western Ukraine and the second largest in the country after Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

Berdychiv is a historic city located in the Zhytomyr region, 43 km south of Zhytomyr. The main attraction of the city is the Monastery of the Discalced Carmelites – a majestic architectural complex with defensive walls, towers and a Catholic church in the Baroque style.

Originally it was a castle of the Tyszkiewicz family who owned this land since the 14th century. In 1630, the governor J. Tyszkiewicz gave the castle to the Catholic Order of Discalced Carmelites after his miraculous rescue from the Tatar captivity. Construction of the monastery lasted from 1634 to 1642. St. Vladimir Patriarchal Cathedral (1862-1882) is an Orthodox cathedral located in Kyiv (Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, 20). It is a monument of neo-Byzantine architecture topped with seven domes.
