Svyatogorsky Historical and Architectural Reserve

Svyatogorsky State Historical-Architectural Reserve is a complex of monuments of history and culture of the 17th-20th centuries.

The reserve is situated at the foot of the chalk mountains (Svyatiye “Holy” Mountains), on the right bank of the Seversky Donets River (near the city of Svyatogorsk located 150 km to the north of Donetsk).

This amazingly picturesque area has the following monuments of history and culture: Svyatogorsk Holy Dormition Lavra; Monument to Artem (Sergeyev F.A.); Memorial of the Second World War on the Artem Mountain; Monument at the grave of Lieutenant V.M. Kamyshev’s Oak. During the Second World War, Soviet troops forced the Seversky Donets River. August 17, 1943, artillery battery of Lieutenant Vladimir Kamyshev took up a position and opened fire on the Germans.

But the landscape was hilly hindering aimed fire. Kamyshev saw a lone oak with a dense crown standing not far from the positions of the battery. Together with the two soldiers, he quietly made his way to the oak tree and climbed up the trunk, and began to adjust the fire of his battery.

The Germans saw them and opened fire. One of the shells hit the trunk of a tree and Vladimir Kamyshev was mortally wounded. After the battle, the hero was taken to hospital where he died. The monument was erected in 1985.

The Second World War Memorial

Monument to Artem. This constructivist monument was erected in 1927 in honor of Fedor Sergeyev (Artem), a revolutionary, Soviet state and party figure. The author of the monument – sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze.
