Giant fish inhabiting the Pripyat River in Chernobyl
No comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Funny, Nature, Video
This is what happens to the inhabitants of the river just after a few decades, if the river is not disturbed by people, and perhaps due to the excessive radiation.
The Earth without man would have been quite a busy place, and the Chernobyl zone as a whole, and in particular the Pripyat River, is an interesting object for such studies.

Walking the streets of ancient Lviv
1 Comment · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Architecture, Cities, Video
Lviv architecture reflects a lot of European styles corresponding to different historical epochs. Fortunately the city was not heavily damaged during the wars of the 20th century.
After fires of 1527 and 1556 there were almost no traces of Gothic Lviv, but the following epochs are well presented: Renaissance, baroque, classicism. The historical center of Lviv has a lot of architectural monuments of the 14th-17th centuries.

How Ukrainian Cossacks play football
No comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Culture, Sports, Video
“The Cossacks” is a series of animated shorts produced in the USSR by the Ukrainian film studio “Kievnauchfilm”. The following cartoon about how the Cossacks play football was filmed in 1970.
The cartoon surprisingly accurately predicted the group of Ukraine at the recent European football championship 2012, and even the order of the matches is correct: Sweden, France, England. The score of the match Ukraine-Sweden (2-1) is also correctly predicted.
And finally there is a scene with heavy rain that is similar to what happened during the match Ukraine-France in Donetsk.

Picturesque sceneries of Chernaya River near Sevastopol
No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Nature, Photos
Chernaya (Black) River is one of the few rivers of the Crimea. The river flows along the bottom of a picturesque gorge in the vicinity of Sevastopol city.
Below, in the dense thickets of overgrown vegetation, it is not hot even in summer scorching heat. Pure water of the river gives the air its freshness and coolness. The relative proximity of the city makes this place quite crowded on weekends and holidays. However, on weekdays, there is almost no one here.

The church soaring in the clouds in Crimea
1 Comment · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Architecture, Photos, Travel
This church can be seen by anyone who is traveling by Yalta highway from Sevastopol to Yalta, or vice versa. Church of the Ascension is standing on the red rock at an altitude of 472 meters above sea level high above small town of Foros, which is why it is also called the Foros church.
Church of the Ascension built in the Byzantine style was constructed in 1892. In the 1930s, crosses and bells were removed from the church. It was restored and re-consecrated in 1990. Photos by Sergey Anashkevitch
